The Missing Man, Christopher Hoey, Found
Yesterday afternoon three little gitls while berrying discovered the body of a man on the
farm of Elias A. Himes, three and one half miles from this city, and about a half mile
from the Hall road, lying in an exposed place close to a piece of woods. Mr. Himes was
notified and shortly after word was brought to the city, when the coroner, undertaker
Nicholson, Dr. Kingston and others started and upon reaching the place designated,
recognized the body as that of Christopher Hoey, who had been missing eight days.
A jury was summoned, and inquest held, and a verdict rendered that he came to his death
from causes unknown to the jury. When the body was discovered one boot was lying next to
it, while the other and the hat could not be found. Decomposition was well advanced, and
the body was in frightful condition, eyse, nose, mouth and ears being nearly eaten away.
The body was brought to the city and deposited in the dead house in the Fourth Ward
Cemetery, and will be buried today.
Christopher Hoey was a shoemaker by trade, a good workman, and had lived in this city 25
or 30 years. He was born in Ireland, and was about 43 years old. In the War of the
Rebellion he was a soldier in the 81st Regiment, and served creditably four years. He was
known as a kind hearted, jovial man, a provident father, and had the one failing of being
his worst enemy. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his untimely end.
