Key West, Fla., Apr 26 (AP)-Captain Granville B. Hoey, who left retirement
in 1939 to recommission the virtually abandoned Key West Naval Station, died
today at the age of 55.
He was chief of staff and district operations officer for the Seventh Naval
District during the hectic months in 1942 when German submarines brought the
sea war to Florida coastal waters. The undersea raiders were effectively
driven away.
Captain Hoey served thirty-two years in the Navy before his retirement in
19(37?). He commanded the destroyer T(u?)rbell, which served as part of the
escort when President Wilson returned from France in July, 1919. For four
years he taught at the Naval Academy.

HOEY [Providence RI Journal, Sunday 2 March 2003] Newport - Thomas G. Hoey, 82, of 70 Harrison Ave., a business owner, died Wednesday at Village Home. Born in Manila, the Phillipines, he was a son of the late Navy Capt. G.B. and Isabel Hoey. Mr. Hoey had been an antiques dealer who owned a shop on Franklin Street. He was a highly decorated Navy veteran of World War II, and served as a fighter pilot. He was awarded a Purple Heart, and was credited with shooting down four Japanese Zeros. He loved sailing. He often conducted his business affairs from the Black Pearl restaurant. The funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
