17 November 1891: Bartley (Bartholomew) Hoey Sr. dies at Wisner Avenue crossing of the O. & W. Railroad in Middletown, New York.

18 November 1891-Middletown Daily Press:
NEARLY A DOUBLE KILLING: MAN KILLED, WOMEN NARROWLY ESCAPES, HORSE DEAD-Bartley Hoey and Wife Struck by the Cars at the Wisner Avenue Crossing of Ontario and Western-The Road Held Responsible by the Jury
The Press reported last week the narrow escape of the young lady from being hit by the cars at the Wisner avenue crossing. A day or two later an order was issued for all first- class trains to slow up before reaching Wisner avenue and to proceed carefully to the Wickham avenue station.
Despite the precaution a terrible accident occurred at the crossing Tuesday night.
Bartley Hoey and his wife had been in this city Tuesday night and started for their home near Bloomingburg about 6 o'clock. They drove on to the Wisner avenue crossing about 6:10. A switch engine had just passed into the yard.
They were driving acroos and had nearly cleared the tracks when a milk car, pushed by the switch engine struck them. "Tommy" Girard, assistant yardmaster of the O. & W., shouted to them to hurry, but it was too late.
THE WAGON WAS SMASHED
to smithereens and the occupants were thrown to the ground. The horse was killed. Hoey went under the rear trucks of the car. Girard hastened to the Wickham avenue station and telephoned Dr. Hulett, who called Dr. Mills to assist.
In the mean time, strong-armed men had removed the woman Mrs. Osborne's No. 34 Wisner avenue. she was suffering from a severe scalp wound, but she will live unless there is a concussion of the brain in addition to the external wound.
THE MAN LIVED A FEW HOURS
The man was taken to Mrs. Stewart's, No. 39 Wisner avenue. He had lost both legs. The cruel wheels had passed over the right leg just above the knee. It hung by the skin. The left leg was completely oft at the thigh. His left arm had been flattened from end to end. That he lived until 11 o'clock in the evening was a wonder, indeed.
Bartley Hoey lived between Bloomingburg and Burlingham. He is survived by six children, four boys and two girls. One of the boys is at Nyack, two are in New York, and one, Michael, is a fireman for the O. & W. The latter was in the wreck at Fair Oaks the other day and escaped by jumping from the engine. One daughter lives at home and the other is a domestic in this city. Mr. Hoey was well known in Middletown. He was blind in one eye and used to peddle around town.
CORONER'S INQUEST
Coroner DeGraw summoned the following jury and held an inquest this morning: J. J. Silk, R. C. Tuthill, jr., C. W. Hill, A. U. Sperling, John DeGraw, and C. H. Foster.
After listening to the testimony, the jury held the company responsible for the death, for not properly protecting the crossing.

19 November 1891-Middletown Daily Press:
MRS. HOEY AND THE DOCTORS: She Declined to Change-She Cannot Eat And Sleeps Little
Mrs. Bartley Hoey was seen by a Press man today at No. 31 Wisner avenue. She is lying in a darkened room, hardly able to turn. Her back and shoulders and one knee are badly bruised, and these with the cut in her head pain her incessantly. She is under Dr. Hulett's care, he being the company's physician.
Lawyer T. A. Read has taken an interest in her case and Wednesday sent Mrs. Hoey some choice wine. He also sent a physician. The latter wanted to take charge of the case, but Mrs. Hoey would not agree to any change of medical attendants.
Mrs. Hoey does not know as yet that her husband was killed. She believes he is badly injured as herself.
She stated that she did not know whether she would sue or not. She had not secured a lawyer, nor sent for one to discuss the case. She tought she and her husband should have something for their rough usage, but only wanted what was fair.
She did not sleep any last night and has not eaten anything.
The body of Bartley Hoey who was killed on the O. & W. Tuesday and lying in Donovan's undertaking rooms. The funeral will be held tomorrow at St. Joseph's. High Mass at 10 a. m.

19 November 1891-Middletown Daily Press:
The Funeral of Bartley Hoey To-morrow
The funeral of the late Bartley Hoey who was killed on Tuesday night by being struck by some O. & W. cars while being switched at Wisner avenue , will take place to-morrow from the undertaking rooms of Mr. Donovan at 10 o'clock a.m. There will be a high mass at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be at St. Jospeh's Cemetery.
  Mrs. Hoey is doing nicely.

12 December 1891-Middletown Daily Times:
Will Probably Bring An Action
Mrs. Bartley Hoey, whose husband was recently killed at the Wisner avenue crossing, has selected as her counsel W. F. O'Neill, Esq., of this city, who, unless satisfactory settlements can be effected, will probably bring actions for damages sustained by Mr. Hoey's death, as well as for her own personal injuries.
Mr. O'Neill, who is termed the "Little Giant," is one of the leaders of the bar in this county, and has already established an enviable reputation as a trial lawyer. Mrs Hoey is to be congratulated upon her selection of counsel.

18 December 1891-Middletown Daily Times:
The Company Will Settle
The O. & W. has notified Mrs. Bartley Hoey that it will pay $5,000 for the death of her husband who was killed about a month ago at the Wisner avenue crossing in this city, and $1,500 for her own injuries.

19 December 1891-Middletown Daily Times:
DESTROYED BY FIRE: The Barn 0f Mrs. Bartley Hoey, near Burlingham, Burned, With Her Live Stock
The barn of the late Bartley Hoey, 2-1/2 miles from Burlingham, Sullivan county, was burned last night about 12 o'clock. Mrs. Hoey and daughter were away from home, leaving her two sons. At about midnight they were awakened by the bellowing of cows. By the time they arrived at the barn it was too late to save any of the stock and contents.
Nineteen cows, two colts and one ox were burned, besides all hay, straw and feed. The horse was away at Middletown, being away to meet Mrs. Hoey at a train. An insurance of $2,100 was on the house, barn and contents, held by Boyd & Combs, of this city. The house being situated a distance from the barn and sheds was uninjured.
It will be remembered that Mr. Hoey was killed at the Wisner avenue crossing a few weeks ago. Verily, troubles never come singly.

20 November 1893-Middletown Daily Times:
A Fireman Scalded: Painful Injuries Received by Bartley Hoey, of the Ontario and Western.
Bartley Hoey, a fireman on the O. & W., while attending to the fire Sunday morning on his engine, which was drawing train 34, was severely scalded by steam caused by a bursted flue. When it happened the train was standing at a point near Rock Rift. Hoey's face received the full force of the steam, and he then threw up his hands, which were also scalded. Before he could escape from it he was severely burned around the abdomen and back. He jumped from the engine down a deep embankment. Medical aid was procured at a nearby station and the wounds dressed. He was brought to Middletown and removed to his home, where Dr. Hulett attended him.
His condition is something fearful, as wherever the steam touched him the skin peeled off. It will be some time before he will be able to resume his duties.
Hoey's father was killed at the Wisner avenue crossing of the O. & W. Nov 18, 1891.
Note: Bartley Hoey Jr. survives these injuries. See 1900 Federal Census.
